FFSnet; Kenya-FFSnet
Farmer Field Schools (FFS) have proven to be a very effective tool for cultivating farmer learning and empowerment. In particular they encourage farmers to develop critical thinking, and this leads to greater self-sufficiency. As the FFS approach becomes increasingly popular and with the global expansion, national institutionalisation and scaling-up of the use of the FFS approach, new issues and challenges emerge - a need has risen to establish a decentralised network and resource centre. In response to this need the FFS Foundation in collaboration with CTA, IBF, FAO and others has developed the Global FFS Network and Resource Centre (FFSnet) - farmerfieldschool.info, which makes use of various Web 2.0 tools. FFSnet is currently being piloted in East Africa and will expand to other countries in 2008 and beyond.
The FFS approach having an increased attention in Kenya with more than 3000 active FFS groups involving about 30,000 farmers the objectives of the Kenya-FFSnet are to increase awareness of FFS and allow those already involved to be able to learn and benefit from the experience of others nationally and globally. Secondly Kenya FFSnet is set to bridge the technical information and other resource gaps identified in FFS using a cost effective Web-based forum for online discussion on specific topic boards.
