Promoting Information and Knowledge Sharing through Vlogging – The GINKS Experience

Prince Deh

GINKS, Ghana

The Ghana Information Network for Knowledge Sharing (GINKS), an Information and Knowledge Sharing Network on ICT4D, in collaboration with the International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD) tries to explore vlogging (=video blogging) as a medium for information and knowledge sharing by the network (www.ginks.blogspot.com). The adoption of an online vlog has generated a lot of interest from GINKS members, is easy to do – a video post can be produced in roughly 1 hour – and can be a useful addition to text. The vlogging process furthermore is hence very simple, can be easily controlled by any non-technical person, and is technologically simpler and cheaper to maintain than a Website.

Vlogs provide an accurate media for presenting otherwise long stories or presentations in a very simple and attractive manner for the large reading target group. Short videos have an added advantage in view of the visual component that helps promote deeper understanding of stories, especially for people who do not have a reading habit.

This case study demonstrates the use of vlogging by GINKS as a network of professionals, used to working online, but we also see the potential of vlogging to increase exchange of knowledge and experiences at grassroot level. One condition that has to be met though is that rural connectivity is available.
