Land Resources Division (LRD), Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC)
The Secretariat of the Pacific Community is a regional technical organization that works in partnership with its 22 member countries and territories with the aim to help Pacific island people make informed decisions about their future. SPC has three main focus areas - Land, Marine and Social Resources. In March 2005, SPC Land Resources Division, to help promote and enhance information and knowledge sharing within the Division and amongst its stakeholders, developed the Information and Knowledge Management (IKM) Strategy, with the help of international donors. This presentation gives an overview of LRD’s IKM initiatives in putting to use various information systems including online databases, Web sites, blogspots, GIS etc existing within the division. The aim is to develop a “One Stop Shop” through the use of various Web 2.0 tools. Pacific islands are dispersed over a huge area of the Pacific Ocean, thus timely delivery of information to the various Ministries of Agriculture and remote farming communities becomes a real challenge. The Digital Strategy, which is part of the Pacific Plan, aims to “bridge the communication divide” and to ensure there is “accessibility for all” especially in rural and remote areas. This is the entry point through which SPC LRD will operate get timely information to stakeholders. The Digital Strategy has engaged the use of VSAT technology and OLPC. The presentation will be preceded by a 5 minute video presentation which will demonstrate the integration of VSAT technology and OLPC with e-Agriculture to reach out to the Pacific rural/ remote communities.
