Adoption into use of Web 2.0 should not be a phenomenon treated as a white elephant. Many organizations use these tools, though in a subconscious manner. The beauty about these tools is their high degree of flexibility as well as ability to quicken the model of improving livelihoods in our rural communities. This, coupled with the concept of engaging rural communities in knowledge sharing for personal development will form the basis of my presentation.
Experience has taught us at BROSDI that indeed the rural persons have the information that will lead to improving their livelihoods. They are in a better position to plan for themselves because they understand their environment better than we do. The trend to plan for them is not a solution – the focus should be bent towards enabling platforms to enact effective knowledge sharing.
Specific tools we use at BROSDI are blogs, Web sites, wikis, computer, RSS, SMS, Telephone, Google Maps, Flickr & Picasa, as well as chat rooms like Skype. It is important to mention at this point that we have packed usage of a couple of these tools for varying reasons. Others are used actively in the concept of enhancing knowledge sharing in the rural communities for personal development.
These tools have proven to be very effective in our working sphere. They also enhance communication avenues among the staff and project partners irrespective of the location. The biggest challenge is that they require access to Internet which is sometimes not available; worse still unreliable especially in the rural areas.
