Connecting Jalisco Parks in a Web site, a Multi-Region Project

Ana, Ramírez-Quintana-Carr

This paper is about the experience of web development in educational settings related to agriculture and natural resources management since 1995. This experience has led us to propose and start a new project to link curricula for students in the 5th and 6th grades with the many sources of information that have been developed at the University of Guadalajara. Another resource that has mostly not been utilized is the connection of experts with students and the general public. In this web-based project the concept of “parks” is taken widely since it includes natural protected areas (NPA’s) declared, and the not yet legally declared wildlife areas or urban green areas, wetlands, to mention instances of a wide concept of a park. The Web site “guadalajaraparks.udg.mx” was previously developed in 2002, and experience soon showed the need to convert it into a content management system, as it was extremely tedious to add new parks and involved the help of a Web designer, and eliminated the possibility of user generated content. Without this, the Web site was too static, and there would not be enough repeat visits. Even though this Web site was widely accepted by the local community and also a large group of students participated in conducting research to validate the concepts and the usability of the site, the project would not continue if we did not make it easy to add new parks, expand the participation of stakeholders, and include other regions of the state.
